Papa Wehewehe ʻŌlelo

The definitions below are in accordance to the 1986 Hawaiian Language Dictionary Revised and Enlarged Edition and is accredited to the work done by scholars Mary Kawena Pukui and Samuel H. Elbert.

Ahupuaʻa

 land division extending from the uplands to the sea, so called because the boundary was

 marked by a ahu (heap) of stones surmounted by an image of a pig.

Kahawai

stream, creek, river, valley, gulch

Loʻi 

Irrigated terrace, especially for taro, but also for rice; paddy.

Manowai

Dam, stream or water sources, headwaters, place where water is obstructed for distribution in channels. 

 

Wai

Water, liquid or liquor of any kind other than sea water 

Waipā

untouched water, waipaʻa: hard, solid water.
