     Watershed Implementation Project

Purpose:   Seven main polluted runoff control components aiming to significantly improve water quality conditions within the ahupuaʻa.

1. Cesspool Replacements

Three (3) existing cesspools along Waipā and Waioli Streams abandoned and replaced with alternative Individual Wastewater Systems.

2. Feral Ungulate Removal

Utilizing hunting and trapping expertise of Waipā staff and associates to undertake a systematic feral ungulate control across the watershed.

3. Constructed Wetland

Develop a single constructed wetland at the Waipā taro loʻi complex to reduce NPS pollution form Waipā taro patches.

4. Livestock Fencing Installation and Livestock Watering

5. Taro Loʻi Management

Propose to implement taro loʻi BMP’s at the Waipā taro farm.

6. Stream Restoration

One of the most significant components; restoration of the Waipā Stream and ripirian corridor in an area where significant blockage of water flow, degradation of water quality, and aquatic habitat, as well as stream bank erosion occur.

7. Forested Upland Erosion Control

Address areas where active soil erosion is occurring in the forested upland of the Waipā ahupuaʻa.

Project Monitoring

Focused monitoring: water quality monitoring, stream bioassessment, photopoint monitoring, and reef health assessment.

Education and Outreach:  utilize the established Community Volunteer Workday series to provide outreach for the project, as well as Waipā's annual community events such as Mango Festival (in August) and Kalo Festival (in December).

1. Project: ʻOʻopu Larvae Sampling

   Timeline: October 2017- Present

   Description: ʻOʻopu larvae net sampling.

Who’s Doing It: Kamehameha Schools ʻAina ʻUlu

Notes: Sampling is completed in other areas throughout the islands.

   Location on Map: Square

2. Project: ʻOʻopu Transects

    Timeline: 2011-Present

Description: ʻOʻopu Transects and Snorkel Surveys

Who’s Doing It: Waipā Foundation, Matt Rosener and Emma.

Notes:Transect runs from upstream of the manowai to the shack/concrete pad. Also older data from Waipa staff along the same transect and even more mauka. There is shapefile data (in old Hawaiian datum).

Location of Map: Upstream of Manowai to Concrete Pad

3. Project: Stream Surveys

    Timeline: 2011- Present

Description: Stream surveys looking at water level and flow. Currently at two stationary sites.

Who’s Doing It: Waipā Foundation, Matt Rosener, UH Mānoa, Center for Conservation, Research and Training (CCRT) Mike Kido.

Notes: Sampling is stationary at two set locations 1) at the poowai, and 2) mauka of the manowai at the stream gauge. Sampling is intermittent, conditions allowing. Earlier data findings might be more questionable.

    Location on Map: X

4. Project: Stream Survey

    Timeline: 2016- Present

Description: 1. Above the mānowai 2. At loʻi

    Who’s Doing It: Waipā Foundation

    Notes: Water level and flow.

    Location on Map: Bullseye

5. Project: Stream Survey

    Timeline: 1. Late 1990s 2. 2016 3. January 2019

Description: Stream Health Assessment at three sites.

Who’s Doing It: UH Mānoa CCRT, Mike Kido

Notes: Assessment of stream health looking at inventory of biology, habitat conditions. Score health based on modeling. Three sites, one below manowai, and two above manowai.

    Location on Map: Star

6. Project: Water Testing

    Timeline: Since 2011

Description: Water quality testing including turbidity, salinity, temperature and dissolved O2.

Who’s Doing It: Waipā Foundation, Matt Rosener

Notes: Eight weekly water testing sites. Testing done with a handheld meter. Is intermittent data from the late 1990s (from Waipa Staff and Mike Kido).
